A while back we told you about a special recording project that was underway designed to educate and inform the Hip Hop community about the prison industrial complex. Entitled, 'No More Prisons', this project made quite a bit of noise when it dropped a slamming single last year featuring Hurricane G. Unlike many other music projects that are seeking to represent a cause, the Prison Moratorium Project took painstaking steps to make sure their message and educational component wasn't lost in the music. Last week they announced that a compilation CD was finally completed and now available at stores. 'No More Prisons' contains 23 original tracks and features more then 70 Hip Hop artists including, Group Home, Apani, Cocoa Brovas, Grandmaster Caz, Hurricane G, dead prez, Daddy-O, Ed OG, the Last Poets and Chubb Rock to name a slight few. Also included is Professor Cornel West and actor/director Danny Hoch.
No More Prisons seeks to not only raise awareness, but also provide training for young prison activists. They are in the process of putting together a 40 city tour which will include workshops, conferences, trainings, spoken word performances and of course Hip Hop shows. This project could not have dropped at a better time. With the passage of Prop 21 in California and the US prison population reaching more then 2 million, discussion around this topic will not subside anytime soon.
